Do I Need a Saudi Transit Visa for an Umrah Flight?

Do I Need a Saudi Transit Visa for an Umrah Flight?

Not simply because your Umrah flight has a connection. If Saudi Arabia is your final destination for Umrah, you need the appropriate Saudi entry permission for your pilgrimage rather than a Saudi transit visa.

A Saudi transit visa may become relevant when you are only passing through Saudi Arabia on your way to another country, particularly if you need to clear immigration, travel on separate tickets, or have a long connection. GOV.UK currently advises travellers that a transit visa may be needed in these circumstances.

Do I Need a Transit Visa for an Indirect Umrah Flight?

Usually, no.

For example, if you fly:

London → Istanbul → Jeddah

or:

Manchester → Doha → Madinah

you are transiting through Turkey or Qatar, not Saudi Arabia.

You therefore need to check the transit requirements of the country where your connection takes place, based on your passport and whether you leave the airport’s international transit area.

This is particularly important for UK residents travelling on a non-British passport, because transit requirements are normally based on nationality rather than UK residence alone.

Our direct vs indirect Umrah flights guide explains the practical differences between connecting and direct journeys.

When Might I Need a Saudi Transit Visa?

According to current GOV.UK Saudi Arabia travel guidance, you may need a transit visa when transferring through Saudi Arabia if:

  • you need to pass through Saudi immigration
  • your onward journey is on a separate ticket
  • there are more than 12 hours between your flights

GOV.UK recommends confirming the requirement with your airline or travel agency before travelling.

Do not assume that being inside an airport means you automatically qualify for visa-free transit.

Is a Saudi Transit Visa Enough to Perform Umrah?

Do not plan an Umrah journey on the assumption that a transit visa automatically gives you the same rights as the visa or travel authorisation you would normally use for your pilgrimage.

British travellers currently need valid Saudi entry permission, and GOV.UK lists Umrah outside the Hajj season among the permitted purposes under Saudi electronic travel routes available to eligible travellers.

You can read our Umrah visa guide before deciding which travel route applies to you.

Visa conditions can change, especially around Hajj, so check the current rules for your exact passport and travel dates.

What If My Connecting Flights Are on Separate Tickets?

This needs extra care.

With separate tickets, you may have to:

  1. pass immigration
  2. collect your checked luggage
  3. check in again
  4. clear security for the next flight

That can change your transit requirements.

It also increases the risk of missing your second flight because the airlines may treat the two journeys independently.

If you are building your own itinerary, read our guide on what happens if you miss your connecting flight to Saudi Arabia.

How Can I Check Before Travelling?

Check three things before paying for an indirect flight:

Your passport nationality: Do not rely only on the fact that you live in the UK.

Your ticket: Confirm whether the journey is on one through-ticket or separate bookings.

Immigration requirement: Ask the airline whether you need to collect luggage or pass through border control during the connection.

The airline should be able to tell you whether your itinerary requires you to enter the transit country.

Planning Your Umrah From the UK?

Indirect flights can sometimes reduce the cost of an Umrah trip, but the cheapest itinerary is not always the simplest once baggage, transit rules and connection times are considered.

Hajj Umrah Travels can arrange flights, accommodation and ground transport as part of your journey. You can contact our Umrah team if you are unsure whether a flight itinerary is suitable.
