Yes, booking the previous hotel night can be worth it if you arrive in Makkah early in the morning and want guaranteed access to a room immediately. Otherwise, you may have to wait until the hotel’s normal check-in time unless it confirms early check-in.
This is especially important after a long UK flight when you may still be in Ihram.
Why Would I Need an Extra Night?
Imagine your flight lands in Jeddah at 3:00 AM.
After immigration, baggage and the transfer to Makkah, you may arrive at your hotel around 6:00 or 7:00 AM.
If your reservation starts that same calendar day but normal check-in is at 3:00 or 4:00 PM, your room may not be ready.
Saudi hotel rules require accommodation properties to state their check-in and check-out policies, but they do not impose one universal check-in time for every hotel.
That can leave you waiting for several hours.
How Does Booking the Previous Night Help?
Suppose you reach Makkah at 7 AM on 10 November.
Instead of booking your stay from 10 November, you book from 9 November.
The room is then theoretically yours from the previous day, allowing you to arrive early on the morning of the 10th.
But there is one very important step:
tell the hotel you will arrive late.
Otherwise, some properties may treat you as a no-show and release the room.
Get written confirmation that they will hold it.
Should I Just Ask for Early Check-In Instead?
You can.
This is usually the cheaper first option.
Contact the hotel before travelling and ask:
“My flight lands at 3 AM. I expect to reach the hotel around 7 AM. Can you guarantee early check-in?”
The important word is guarantee.
“Subject to availability” means the room might still not be ready.
If you are travelling with:
- elderly parents
- young children
- a pregnant traveler
- somebody with a medical condition
the cost of an extra night may be worthwhile for comfort.
Can the Hotel Store My Luggage While I Wait?
Many hotels offer luggage storage, but you should confirm this with your actual property rather than assume it.
Saudi tourist guidance says travelers should check the property’s service policies and reservation conditions before booking. MT.gov.sa
If luggage can be stored, you may be able to leave your bags and wait elsewhere.
However, that still does not give you a private place to sleep, shower or change.
What If I Am Still in Ihram?
This is where early arrival becomes more important.
If Makkah is your first destination and you have already entered Ihram, you remain in Ihram until you complete your Umrah and Halq or Taqsir.
You do not have to perform Umrah immediately simply because you arrived in Makkah.
If you are exhausted, you can rest first while continuing to observe Ihram restrictions.
Read our guide on whether you must perform Umrah immediately after arriving in Makkah for more detail.
Is an Extra Night Worth the Cost?
Think of it as paying for guaranteed access, not simply another night of sleep.
It may be worth it when:
- your flight lands before dawn
- you have young children
- you are travelling with elderly parents
- your journey involves a long connection
- you want to rest before performing Umrah
- the hotel cannot guarantee early check-in
It may be unnecessary if the hotel gives you confirmed early check-in.
What Should I Check Before Booking?
Contact the hotel and confirm:
Normal check-in time
Early check-in availability
Early check-in fee
Whether it is guaranteed
Luggage-storage availability
What happens if you book the previous night but arrive after midnight
Keep the answer in writing.
Saudi tourism rules state that the reservation document should show relevant policies, including check-in/check-out arrangements and cancellation conditions.
What If My Room Still Is Not Ready?
If your booking already covers the time when you arrive and the hotel cannot provide the confirmed room, speak to reception and ask them to check the reservation.
Keep your booking confirmation available.

Planning Your First Night in Makkah?
Do not plan only your flight time.
Work backwards from:
landing → immigration → luggage → transfer → hotel arrival → check-in → rest → Umrah.
That one calculation can prevent an exhausted family from spending eight hours waiting in a hotel lobby.
