If the Haramain train is sold out, first check other departure times and dates before arranging alternative transport. Seats can be limited during busy Umrah, Ramadan and Hajj periods, so do not assume you will always find a same-day ticket at the station.
The Haramain railway carries very high pilgrim demand; for Hajj 2026 alone, operators planned more than 5,300 trips and 2.21 million seats over part of the peak season.
Should I Check Another Train First?
Yes.
Before abandoning the train completely, check:
earlier departures
later departures
Business Class
the following day
Availability is displayed by train and class during the official booking process.
A sold-out 10:00 AM service does not automatically mean every train that day is full.
Can More Seats Become Available Later?
Potentially, because passenger plans can change.
You can recheck the official booking system periodically, but do not build your entire trip around the hope that cancelled seats will appear.
If your hotel checkout or flight depends on leaving that day, arrange a backup.
Should I Go to the Station and Hope for a Ticket?
You can ask the ticket office about current availability, but there is no guarantee that a sold-out online service will suddenly have enough seats for your family.
SAR has upgraded Haramain ticket offices and also supports booking through its online platform, app, kiosks and call center.
For a family of four or five, relying on last-minute availability is much riskier than for one traveler.
What Are My Alternatives?
If no suitable train is available, practical alternatives include:
Private car transfer
Useful for families, elderly pilgrims and people with several suitcases.
Licensed taxi or ride-hailing service
Useful when travelling with fewer people and manageable luggage.
Coach or organized transfer
Often suitable when travelling through a group or Umrah package.
Before accepting a private transfer, confirm:
- full price
- pickup point
- destination
- vehicle size
- luggage capacity
Do not choose an unknown driver purely because they approach you at the station.
Is a Private Transfer Better for a Family?
Sometimes.
Imagine four passengers have:
- four large suitcases
- hand luggage
- a pushchair
- an elderly parent
Even if train seats are available, moving everything through stations may be tiring.
A private vehicle can provide hotel-to-hotel travel.
However, the Haramain train itself is very fast: the Makkah–Madinah journey is around 2 hours 20 minutes under current operations.
So compare speed versus convenience, not simply ticket price.
Should I Book Haramain Tickets in Advance?
Yes, especially when travelling during:
- Ramadan
- school holidays
- weekends
- busy Umrah periods
- around Hajj operations
The closer your trip gets, the less flexibility you may have over departure time and class.
Do not wait until your final morning in Makkah if reaching Madinah that day is essential.
What If the Train Sells Out After I Already Booked My Hotels?
Check whether changing your travel day is cheaper than arranging a private transfer.
Compare:
hotel amendment cost
versus
alternative transport cost
If your hotel cannot be changed, a private transfer may be the simplest option.
What If I Missed My Train Rather Than It Being Sold Out?
That is a different problem.
Your existing ticket may not simply transfer automatically to the next service.
