If your Wudu breaks during Tawaf, stop the Tawaf and renew your Wudu before continuing if you follow the Hanafi view. You do not necessarily need to restart all seven rounds.
Darul Ifta Birmingham’s Hanafi guidance says that after renewing Wudu, you can continue from where it broke; if you cannot remember the exact point, you may restart that particular circuit.
Do I Have to Start Tawaf Again From Round One?
Under the Hanafi position, generally no.
If your Wudu breaks during a circuit:
- Stop your Tawaf.
- Go and renew your Wudu.
- Return to the Mataf.
- Continue from the point where your Wudu broke.
If finding the exact point is difficult, restarting that one circuit is a simple practical option.
Darul Ifta Birmingham specifically states that the entire Tawaf does not need to be restarted under this Hanafi ruling.
Our step-by-step Umrah guide explains how all seven circuits are completed.
What If I Had Already Finished Several Rounds?
Keep track of how many complete rounds you finished before leaving.
For example, if you completed three circuits and your Wudu broke during the fourth, you would renew Wudu and continue according to the ruling you follow rather than automatically returning to round one.
Some Hanafi scholars recommend restarting the incomplete circuit if that is easier to track.
This is why counting each circuit carefully is useful.
Do All Scholars Give the Same Ruling?
No.
There is genuine scholarly disagreement.
The majority of jurists consider purity important for Tawaf, but they differ over what happens after Wudu is broken. Hanafi and Shafi’i positions allow resuming after purification in certain circumstances, while Maliki and Hanbali rulings can require Tawaf to be restarted. Another scholarly view holds that Wudu is not a condition for Tawaf at all.
Because of this, follow the madhhab or qualified scholar you normally rely on rather than mixing rulings during the ritual.
What If I Need to Use the Toilet During Tawaf?
Leave the Tawaf area, use the toilet, renew your Wudu and then return.
Do not try to continue simply because you are worried about losing your place in a crowded Mataf.
Hanafi guidance allows the pilgrim to resume the Tawaf after renewing Wudu rather than automatically repeating everything.
What If I Have a Medical Problem That Repeatedly Breaks Wudu?
Someone with a continuous medical condition may have different rules under the concept of a ma’dhur, or excused person.
For example, Hanafi guidance recognizes special rulings when an ongoing condition continues throughout a prayer time and makes normal Wudu difficult to maintain.
If this applies to you, ask a qualified scholar before travelling so you understand your specific ruling.

Does Wudu Matter for Sa’i Too?
Sa’i is different from Tawaf.
Under Hanafi guidance, Wudu is not required for the validity of Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, although being in a state of purity is still preferable.
Our Safa Marwa dua guide explains the Sa’i process in more detail.
