What Should I Pack for Umrah From the UK?

Packing for Umrah means lightweight clothes suited to warm Saudi weather, comfortable footwear for walking long distances, and your essential religious items. Avoid overpacking so you have room in your luggage for dates, Zamzam and gifts on the journey home.

Before you start, check your airline’s baggage allowance. UK pilgrims are frequently caught out on the return leg rather than the outbound one, because gifts and dates weigh far more than people expect.

Essential Packing Checklist

Category Recommended items
Religious essentials 2 sets of Ihram (men), lightweight modest abayas or dresses and spare headscarves (women), pocket Quran, dua book, prayer mat, tasbih
Footwear Comfortable broken-in walking shoes, flip-flops or slip-on sandals, and a drawstring shoe bag for mosque entrances
Clothing & comfort Breathable cotton undergarments, a light jacket for chilly Madinah nights in winter, unscented toiletries
Health & hygiene Painkillers, throat lozenges, blister plasters and tape, lip balm, rehydration sachets, prescription medicines in original packaging
Electronics & travel Power bank, phone charger, universal adapter (see the note below), long charging cable for hotel rooms
Documents Passports, visa printouts, hotel vouchers, insurance details and your vaccination certificate

If you are travelling with an Ihram for the first time and are unsure when and how to put it on, our step-by-step guide on how to perform Umrah walks through the sequence properly.

What Should I Pack for Ihram?

Men should pack two sets of Ihram, not one. The cloth gets dusty and damp quickly in crowds, and a spare set means you are never stuck. Add an Ihram belt with a zip pocket, which is far more practical than it sounds for carrying a room key and a little cash.

Everything you use while in a state of Ihram must be unscented  soap, moisturizer, shampoo, deodorant and wet wipes. Scented products are not permitted, and most standard UK toiletries are perfumed, so buy these specifically before you fly rather than assuming your usual products will do.

Women should pack modest, breathable clothing and more headscarves than they think they need. Loose, dark, lightweight fabric handles heat and crowds better than tight or heavy material.

For families, remember that boys who have reached the age of understanding will need their own Ihram too, in a size that actually fits.

What Footwear Should I Take?

Two pairs is the practical answer: sturdy walking shoes for ziyarah and travel days, and slip-on sandals or flip-flops for the Haram, where you will be removing them constantly.

Break in your walking shoes at home. Blisters on day two of a seven-night trip affect your whole Umrah, and no amount of budget saved elsewhere makes up for it.

Pack a cheap drawstring bag for your shoes. It keeps them with you rather than lost in a rack among thousands of identical pairs. If you are wondering about the rules around footwear inside the Haram, see our answer on whether you can wear shoes during Tawaf.

What Should I Keep in My Hand Luggage?

Keep all medicines, physical passports, visa printouts, hotel vouchers and your vaccination certificate in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag.

There are two reasons. First, you may be asked for documents at check-in and on arrival, and a bag in the hold is no help. Second, if your luggage is delayed, you still have everything essential. It is also worth knowing your rights if things go wrong before you fly  our Umrah flight cancellation guide covers what to do.

Your MenACWY certificate belongs in this pile too. It is a genuine entry requirement, not a formality, and it should clearly state which vaccine was given  see what vaccinations you need for Umrah for the timings and validity periods.

Also pack an Ihram set in your hand luggage if you plan to enter the state of Ihram before landing.

Do I Need a Plug Adapter for Saudi Arabia?

Usually not. Saudi Arabia mainly uses the same Type G three-pin socket as the UK, on 230V, so British plugs generally fit without an adapter.

Some older buildings and hotels still have Type A or B sockets, so a cheap universal adapter is sensible insurance rather than a necessity. What is genuinely worth packing is a multi-plug or extension lead  hotel rooms shared by a family rarely have enough accessible sockets for four phones and a power bank.

What Documents Do I Need to Pack?

Passports with sufficient validity, your visa confirmation, hotel and transfer vouchers, insurance documents and your vaccination certificate. Take photocopies of everything, keep one set separate from the originals, and leave a copy with someone at home.

For the full list and the validity requirements, read what documents you need for Umrah and our pre-flight visa information guide. If you are carrying prescription medication, check that it is permitted and keep it in its original labelled packaging with a copy of the prescription  this is also where having travel insurance in place matters.

Does the Season Change What I Pack?

Yes, more than most people expect. Summer packing is about heat management  light colours, an umbrella for shade, and rehydration sachets. Winter packing needs a genuine light jacket, because Madinah evenings get cold and catch pilgrims off guard.

If your dates are still flexible, our guide to the best time for Umrah explains how the weather and crowd levels shift through the year.

What Should I Leave Room For?

Leave 5kg to 8kg of spare allowance. Almost every pilgrim comes home heavier with Ajwa dates, attar, prayer mats and gifts for relatives, and excess baggage charges at Jeddah are far more expensive than paying for extra allowance at the time of booking. If you are still comparing options, our Umrah information guide covers baggage and package inclusions in more detail.
